Cool Cabana Retro Renovation

Collums Construction recently completed a cool renovation at a Mid-Century Modern house in Lakeview, built in 1952. The owner wanted to turn their “falling down” garage into a guest apartment and cabana, while retaining the classic styling of the house.

The time frame for the project was 3 months during the summer, and we delivered the finished product just in time for the owners to enjoy the gorgeous 2015 Fall weather. They now have a new party space as well as accommodations for guests during the holidays.

The existing two-car garage had extensive termite damage, and was not functional at all. Our Project Manager, Leah Glade, acting as the designer on the project, came up with a floor plan to make the space into a one bedroom apartment with a full bath and kitchenette.

Two garage doors were installed – one on the street side that is fixed in place and one on the yard side that can open completely to turn the living area into an indoor/outdoor entertaining space.

Terrazzo tile that was leftover from an older interior renovation project was used in the bedroom. A coordinating tile was selected to use throughout the rest of the space. The bathroom was built with an open, airy feel to maximize the space.

A custom kitchenette was designed and built by Central City Millworks with efficiency and aesthetics in mind. The entire kitchen can be closed off when not in use.

Accent walls with color changing LED lights were designed and installed to add a bit more flair to this cool cabana.
